Tuberculosis Around the World

Tuberculosis is a global disease. Very few parts of the world have escaped the lethal attention of the Tuberculosis bacillus. The disease is most prevalent in Africa, South-east Asia and the Western Pacific – accounting for more than 80% of all Tuberculosis cases. However, there is a significant concentration of cases in Eastern Mediterranean countries.

Two thirds of the people dying from Tuberculosis live in Africa and South East Asia. In addition, around 20% of total deaths are people in Western Pacific regions. Other countries cannot afford to be complacent, however. For instance, there are substantial mortalities in the Eastern Mediterranean region and in Europe as a whole.

Crucially, Tuberculosis has to be controlled in a coordinated manner worldwide so that it never again is considered as one of the most lethal diseases to affect the human race.
